The edges of the plates in the Earth's crust scrape against each other and
rocks split, forming a fault. If the friction between plates is strong, the
pressure can build up over time. Suddenly, one of the plates gives way
and moves. It is like a stuck door that suddenly opens as you keep
pushing against it.
